New formula for Monotony

, Posted in General

The formula for calculating the training monotony has been slightly adapted. The original formula is very sensitive to high monotony. This problem should be avoided by making a slight adjustment.

Monotony = average(TRIMP) / (stddev(TRIMP) + average(TRIMP))

Instead of dividing the average TRIMP by the standard deviation, it is now divided by the sum of the standard deviation and the mean value. In the case of a standard deviation towards zero – i.e. the same TRIMP values every day – the monotony now approaches 1 (previously towards infinity). The lowest value results if you have only exercised on one of the last seven days. This results in a monotony of 1/(1+sqrt(6)) = 0.2899.

To make it easier to interpret the values and distinguish them from the previous values, Runalyze displays the values as percentages. An absolute value of 0.2899 corresponds to a monotony of 0%, an absolute value of 1.0 to a monotony of 100%.

The formula for training strain, which is heavily dependent on the monotony, has also been adjusted as the value range of the monotony has changed. Instead of values between 1 and 10 (where everything above 2 was already considered very high), the monotony now reaches values between 0.2899 and 1.0. Training strain is therefore now calculated as:

Training Strain = sum(TRIMP) * Monotony / 0.5
